🌿 Our Approach Learning Through Curiosity, Connection & Play

At Dean Family Child Care Home & Preschool, we believe young children are capable, curious learners who learn best through meaningful relationships, hands-on experiences, play, and exploration. Our approach is child-centered and responsive. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all model, I observe children's interests, questions, developmental needs, and emerging skills and use those observations to thoughtfully plan experiences that encourage deeper learning. The result is a preschool experience that is intentional and educational while still honoring what childhood should be—joyful, playful, active, and full of discovery.

🌱 Play Is How Children Learn

Play is at the heart of our preschool day—but play here is much more than simply "free time." When children build with blocks, mix ingredients in the mud kitchen, create artwork, engage in dramatic play, investigate something they discovered outside, or work through a disagreement with a friend, important learning is happening. Through purposeful play, children naturally develop early literacy and mathematics skills, scientific thinking, creativity, communication, problem-solving, motor skills, and social-emotional competence. My role as the teacher is to observe, ask thoughtful questions, introduce new materials and ideas, and help children extend their thinking without taking ownership of the experience away from them.

🍃 Inspired by Reggio Emilia

Our program draws inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach, particularly its view of children as capable learners and its emphasis on relationships, exploration, documentation, and the environment as an important part of learning.

Children's interests and questions help influence the direction of our experiences. Rather than every child being expected to create the same product or arrive at the same answer, children are encouraged to experiment, represent their ideas in different ways, revisit their thinking, and learn alongside one another.

Children aren't simply recipients of learning. They are active participants in it.

🌿 Nature as a Teacher

Our learning extends well beyond the walls of our indoor classroom. Time outdoors gives children opportunities to investigate the natural world, take appropriate risks, strengthen their bodies, solve problems, collaborate, create, and experience concepts that can't always be replicated inside. A stick can become a tool. Mud can become a recipe. A bug can inspire an investigation. Changing weather can lead to questions about the seasons. Our outdoor classroom is intentionally designed to encourage this type of open-ended discovery while giving children plenty of time to simply be children outdoors.

❤️ Social-Emotional Learning

Before Children Can Learn With Others, They Are Learning About Themselves.
Social-emotional development is an essential part of school readiness and is intentionally supported throughout our preschool day.Children are learning to identify and communicate emotions, recognize the perspectives of others, navigate friendships, establish boundaries, solve conflicts, manage frustration, and become increasingly independent.Rather than expecting young children to already possess these skills, we recognize them as skills that need to be taught, practiced, and supported.Our indoor and outdoor calming spaces provide children with supportive environments where they can begin recognizing what their bodies need and practice strategies for regulation.The goal isn't to eliminate big feelings. It's to help children develop the tools to understand and manage them.

🎨 The Environment as the Third Teacher

Our learning environments are thoughtfully designed to encourage independence, curiosity, creativity, and connection.Materials are intentionally selected and arranged so children can see possibilities, make choices, access materials independently, and return to ideas over time.Natural and open-ended materials allow children to decide what something might become rather than being limited to one predetermined use.Both our indoor and outdoor classrooms evolve in response to the children using them. When something isn't supporting meaningful play and learning, we observe, reflect, and adapt.

📚 Intentional Teaching & Kindergarten Readiness

Play-Based Doesn't Mean Unplanned. Behind our playful preschool day is intentional teaching grounded in early childhood development. Children develop the foundational skills they'll need for kindergarten through developmentally appropriate experiences involving language and literacy, early mathematics, science, creative arts, fine and gross motor development, communication, independence, and social-emotional learning. Rather than pushing elementary-level academics down into preschool, we focus on building the foundations that allow children to become confident and capable learners. Kindergarten readiness means more than knowing letters and numbers. It also means being able to communicate needs, participate in a group, solve problems, care for belongings, build relationships, persist through challenges, and approach new experiences with confidence.

🌎 Every Child Belongs

Because anti-bias education is part of what you've worked on, I would include this. We believe every child and family deserves to feel seen, respected, and represented in their preschool community. Children encounter books, materials, conversations, and experiences that reflect diverse families, cultures, abilities, identities, and ways of living. Through everyday experiences, children are encouraged to notice similarities and differences, ask questions, practice empathy, challenge unfairness, and understand that everyone belongs.
